My work – View for Mobile Phones

SlideShowPro has come up with an update for Director, and I am testing there new update so that Mobile users can view my website as well, come to find out that the HTML5 only works with iOS and Android phones, so I guess I can’t test this on my blackberry – Oh well if you users out there see htis on your iOS or Android phones, please feel free to leave a comment.

SlideShowPro Director 1.5 is here

Well SlideShowPro Director 1.5 is here and the PUBLISH feature is one of my favorites, so easy to attach your albums anywhere.  I have been a SlideShowPro user for a number of years now but never really have explored the features it has to offer.  I believe the new Director 1.5 has the HTML5 and should be compatible with mobile devices.  I think that is a winner feature, now it’s time for me to figure out how it works! Below is a copy of one of my albums:

Canon EOS 60D – Already?

Wow! Canon is really going at it now.  The D series revolution is going crazy, just after releasing the Canon EOS 50D, they come out with the Canon EOS 60D – at the same MSRP price? Why Canon?  I have been a big fan of the 1D’s series and I am glad you kept the 1Ds Mark II around for awhile and made it an amazing camera and I did really enjoy it and I know technology is coming out so fast and we need to keep up, so I hope the Mark III 1Ds will be around as long as the Mark II 1Ds has.

I just feel bad for those who just purchased the Canon EOS 50D, knowing the Canon EOS 60D is the same price and of course has a higher and new technology built-in to it, naming a few:

1.  )Max. aperture TTL metering with 63-zone SPC with the following selectable modes:
Evaluative metering (linkable to all AF points)
Partial metering (approx. 6.5% of viewfinder at center)
Spot metering (approx. 2.8% of viewfinder at center)
Center-Weighted average metering

2.) Total pixels: Approx. 19.0 Megapixels: 5432 (H) x 3492 (V) pixels

3.) Effective pixels: Approx. 18.0 Megapixels: 5200 (H) x 3462 (V) pixels

Oh well – Technology as we all know it, travels so fast that we as the consumers are constantly on the chase.

Alienbees Ring Flash Experience

Finally!  I got my hands on the Alienbees Ring Flash (by chance)  After using the nifty Profoto Ring Flash for 5 years now, I have always wondered how the Alienbees Ring Flash performed, I have seen various good reviews and some mixed reviews online, but the only beset review you can get is from you!  Using it yourself.

Overall I was pleased with the results, although power wise, not quite close to my favorite Profoto RingFlash – but for what you need it for, it has great features.  Power wise I was just using it for 2 various F-Stops, so I didn’t really push it that much, since it was not mine and it was my first time using it, the slider where you were supposed to mount your camera was missing a piece, I am not quite sure if it came with one and was attached to someone’s camera.

I had a good experience using it and would love to experiment more on it and post some cool pictures.  Below is a sample of one of the shots.

RonOsmena.Com – Up and Running!

Wow! Finally got the chance to finish up my simple revamped site, decided to get rid of the heavy front page FLASH – just wanted it to load fast and easy – Clients will be happy not to wait for the front loading page.

For now I decided to incorporate my work under one showcase – “PORTFOLIO” later on as I update my images I will break them down into there corresponding categories. – Remember this was an update on my core site files and the look and feel, easier navigation and just direct. Images will come next and boy do I have a lot of images to catalog and edit and upload.

So for now I hope you enjoy the new and simple www.ronosmena.com site and by the way I also changed my blog location, not really a frontend change, as a user, you won’t even notice the change, but yeah I did!

Oh well!  So here we go! It is now time to get indexed by GOOGLE, YAHOO and BING!

Just a little plug – Check out PurpleARO coming soon!!!

What are you worth? Think twice…

Wow! I just had to go and write about this topic.  Pricing!  A biggest problem in our industry of Photography – we all know what we are worth or do we?  I was just browsing around other fellow shooters and boy was I ever surprised.

I have seen photographers advertising wedding photography services as low as $799 for 2 photographers and with editing services, I mean really?  Are you serious?  I also checked out there website, this photographers are really good, some OK but most of them have good work in there portfolios.  It is so sad to see how low they put there selves out there.

Only 2 major things that make this happen, either they are hurting and not able to market themselves or they just want to be greedy and do the LB (Low Ball) game.  Either way it’s is just not healthy for the industry nor for themselves.

I am sure there are a lot of blogs writing about this issue but I just had to voice out my issue. Just now I have seen portrait sessions for $140 with free prints…..WOW! seriously are this GWC’s or are this real pro’s either way it just killing our market and image as well.

We can always say “You get what you pay for”

Poor Mans Lighting – Or So We Think

Hey people! Its been awhile since I wrote on my blog. As I always try to find time to at least write once a day I tend to get tied up with work and shooting, even on the weekends, oh well I try.

Here we go, well on to the topic: Poor Mans Lighting – Or So We Think.

Poor Mans Lighting a term that many photographers use, pertaining to home made, cheap, modified lighting. I was inspired to write today because last night as I missed my train, I had 2 hours to kill in the L.A Union Station, then I noticed a classic well dressed young lad and a beautiful classic dressed lady and then a lady crouched down holding a camera snapping away.

The photographer was snapping away with an assistant by her side with a 4 feet long by 1 feet wide bathroom mirror (those you can get in target or ikea for $6) and a 12 by 15 silver looking board or sheet as an add on to the mirror and all they had was the ambient lighting from the train station, which was not a whole lot, I was assuming she was using at least a 2.8 lens.

Now seeing this in action I really wanted to see the outcome of the shots, who knows it may not be a poor mans light equipment, it might be a simple add on to give out an amazing effect, with technology to our disposal I think anything is possible, you may have a profoto head but for a certain effect all you need is a bulb or a flashlight, this brings it down to one basic medium “LIGHT”. Light is what it is, it makes and shapes the images we create through the eyes of our shutters, so what ever form or shape it may come in, it is what it is.

Sitting there watching them in action with the tools of trade I see how minimal and how overboard we can get sometimes when all we need is a really simple shot that will tell a story.

Its just amazing how a shoot can be pretty simple to a pretty demanding, that’s why we love what we do, we can use whatever tools necessary to get what effect we are trying show.

Keep shooting my friends!

Visage De Jour Photoshoot

This shoot was done for a magazine called Visage De Jour – Atlanta based publication.

Time Travel

It was a fun shoot, it was supposed to be a genie themed shoot, but with the outfit that was sent to us by the client, it was challenging for us to come through.

Outdoor Shoot – Laguna Beach

This was a great shoot, planning and timing was everything. This shoot was planned in 2 hours or less. Worked with 2 wonderful models, a very great hair and makeup stylist Michael David Gallego.

We met up, we setup and shot! Michael and I were trying to catch the famous Laguna Beach sunset in this secluded part of the beach, but unfortunately the sun just went down to fast for us to hit the sand, instead we shot the beach silhouette and again we had to hurry because the tide was coming up really fast.

It was a tough shoot, a shoot where everything was in a limited resource, our space, our lights, to even it all up, I had “0″ available light.

But we made it happen!
